Why are you doing this?

There are currently a large number of mp3 applications being developed that make use of relational databases to hold and manipulate mp3 file information. The only problem is that none of these applications use databases that are compatible.

The SMDP aims to provide the developers of these applications with a standard format for the database that their applications use. By doing this we will make it possible to create a mp3 database that can be used by a large number of mp3 applications. We will also be providing API's for a number of different languages to make it easier for developers to use our database, as well as a utility set of small programs to make it easier for the user to manipulate the database.

What file formats will you support?

Despite the project name, we will provide support for mp3 and Ogg Vorbis audio files in the API.

What programming languages do you plan on supporting?

Development is currently in progress on Java and C/C++ API's. Perl and PHP API's are planned for the future.

What databases do you plan on supporting?

There are currently schemas for PostgreSQL and MySQL. MS-SQL and Oracle support is planned for the future. The API's will support many databases as they will rely on external database acces libraries (such as DBI for Perl and jdbc for Java).

What can I do to help?

To help spread the word, you can place one of these two nifty logos on your website:
